Revealing thread on the crap deal we're handing down to younger gens. We've stripped the institutions for profit and left husks behind. It's time to recapitalize the things that make life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness possible and extend that promise to all Americans.
As a GenXer, I'm caught somewhat in between. On the one hand, my college was relatively cheap, so I didn't have to start my adult life with an anchor around my neck. On the other hand, as a NTT college instructor and writer, my employment as been as a member of the precariat.
Millennials got the full double whammy. I'm fine, tho if I'd been born 20 years earlier with the same career, I'd be far better than fine. I'd be a downright wealthy mofo. (Though I also probably would've figured out how to work less.) The odds of even achieving fine have dropped
If I'd been a TT faculty member instead of contingent instructor, I would've earned an additional $275-350K over the course of my career. +4% going into retirement. My newspaper column would've paid 3x what I make now. Still, I feel lucky compared to those younger than me.
There will be a time where I will be able to choose not to work, even though I don't really see making that choice any time soon. That puts me in a very fortunate place relatively speaking.
Also gotta acknowledge that we never had children. If we had, all bets are probably off. I'm not sure we'd have any savings.
