First session this afternoon by @HilaryLowe2 looking at universal vocab intervention for adolescents w/ language disorder #Naplic19 #DevLangDis
@HilaryLowe2 Whole-class Rx important - evidence for what we know works for teaching vocab & that teachers need to teach vocab, but that in-depth vocab instruction in schools reported to be minimal #Naplic19 #DevLangDis
In @HilaryLowe2 's research, the vocab rx was embedded into the classroom and delivered by the classroom teachers. Focus was on science vocabulary, comparing 'usual' teaching & the experimental approach. #Naplic19
Key strategies used:
1) knowledge ratings of words before Rx
2) visual image of the concept/word
3) looking for morphemes & context clues, asking a friend, looking it up to work out the meaning
4) word study (semantic map)
5) key word sheets for revision
#Naplic19 #DevLangDis
Take-home msgs:
1) vocab & word-learning in the classroom context is effective collaboration w/ teachers & SLTs
2) small changes in vocab knowledge in 1x subject, has a functional impact
3) if this was replicated across other curriculum areas the impact would be greater
5 parts of this approach:
1) All About Me (visible/invisible difficulties, strengths, similarities & differences b/w the students & others)
2) Communication & language (what is it, how does it work)
3) #DevLangDis
4) Strategies (own & w/ other ppl)
5) Sharing what I've learned
12-sx Rx block delivered in 1:1/sml group using a set of lesson plans including 1) objective 2) list of key concepts 3) resources needed 4) step-by-step guide 4) suggested f/u activities. Looks like a great resource for #DevLangDis @pinchof_SaLT & @AmandaFiner #Naplic19
Other aspects of the program:
1) working w/ families & teachers
2) home activity sheets to fill in w/ parents
3) CYP keeping resources in a folder
4) communication passports
5) sharing learning w/ teachers, head teachers, peers
6) raising awareness in own schools #Naplic19
