#DearMeTenYearsAgo, you’re in for a helluva ride over this next decade. You’re unemployed right now, you’re drinking way too much, and you’re a month away from just outright stopping paying your mortgage. ... But, you’re going to keep going. And it truly is going to get better.
More than better, you’re in for a life beyond your imagining. You’re going to have a front row seat to history, several times over. You’re going to interview the president and cover the Supreme Court. You’re going to win awards and meet and work with such remarkable people.
Then, near the end of that decade, you’re going to change things up again — because you can’t imagine not taking an opportunity you’ll be given to work with another incredible group of people who are working to fix the criminal legal system.
All of this will be possible because in about a year, you’re going to decide that drinking has stopped working for you. I know you know it, in your heart, already — but you’re not there yet. That’s OK. You’ll get there. And when you do, everything will change.
It’s still going to be tough, you’re going to have to learn how to live your life in a new way. But you’ll grow into sobriety, and you’ll end up loving it and not being able to imagine life any other way. You’ll even start enjoying exercise, and you’ll do it consistently.
There still will be moments you falter — you’re human! — and they’ll almost hurt more because you’ve taken the time to understand why you do the things you do. But, you’ll be much better about acceptance. (Usually.) And you’ll work to improve yourself. Daily.
But most of all, you’ll be grateful. For everything you’ve gone through — because it will make you the person you become. For all of the people in your life — because you truly are blessed with amazing family (wait until you meet Henry and Sammy!) and friends. For your life.
And this Twitter thing you’re talking about Prop 8 on, well, you’re still going to be on here, and one of the ways you’ll center yourself before bed is to tell everyone good night. And it will make you smile each time.
You’ll write:

Night, all, and let us try to be good to one another — and ourselves — this week.
Oh, yeah, and you’ll love Pokémon. I can’t explain it to you because you wouldn’t believe me. But, trust me, you really will.
