Don't lock yourself out of your device. Easy way to lengthen your passcode is enter it 3 times. Once you get used to that for a year or so start adding characters.Update your iPhone to the latest version to further protect it from unintended unlocks.
Consider turning off touch id. Starbug & now others continue to show ways to pwn it.
