Brexit was always going to be poison for the Tory party. Deliver it and the voters punish them for making them poorer, don’t deliver it and voters punish them for the betrayal, and all so David Cameron could bring the party together
Churchill won war and lost by a landslide. So did Major after 5yrs of growth. Even if people were satisfied with Brexit they wouldn’t reward anyone for it. Voters don’t thank politicians for the good things they’ve done and blame them for the bad things they’ve done to themselves
Of course, with Brexit, it’s both something people have done to themselves and something the Tory party has inflicted on them. Now the party literally has nowhere to turn. In trying to keep itself together it may well have eradicated itself for a generation.
