There’s a horrible feeling here. It’s that somehow Labour leadership wants to focus on mythologised Northern working class because they’re more ‘heartland’ authentic: the downtrodden rising against system. Even when they actually didn’t. And that’s too grim. I hope it’s wrong.

Why grim? Not just because it sells out majority of Lab voters who wanted to Remain & still do. Not because it privileges Hull over Hackney in a kind of reverse snobbery. But because it invents a working class who apparently voted to make themselves poorer when they simply didn’t

As I say, I hope I’m wrong. And I hope the Labour leadership will follow the evidence. Because the alternative is that they impose a Brexit on their voters which they never wanted, do it in those voters’ names, and destroy any chance of delivering social justice for a generation
