Listening to my @SLSncl colleague professor David Howard speak about semantic therapy in children and adults with WFD #IASLTcon19
Who benefits from which treatment? Semantic versus phonological or do people benefit from both and really the tasks are our therapies just word learning tasks? #iasltcon19
Semantic Feature Analysis Therapy seems to have underlying assumption that naming associated words facilitate access HOWEVER this is actually inhibitory not facilitatory
RCT led by Julie Morris @SLSncl comparing sematic feature analysis with therapy in the presence of picture
Overall significant improvements and specific effects of both treatment but lots of differences between how individuals respond and repetition in the presence of a picture has bigger gains
There are however responders and non responders to the treatments and specific to items taught - and the people wh respond to RIPP tend to also respond to SFA. There are no clear predictors of who will benefit and who won’t
Now talking about the WORD study with children contrasting semantic and phonological treatments - again see gains during treatment phases - on average semantic treatment produced greater gains - but very diverse for individual children
In contrast to adults with aphasia different children do respond differently to different interventions
Predictors of responding? Look at performance at baseline on nonword rep test &picture association tests-those with poor nonword rep benefit from phonological therapy-those with poor semantic knowledge benefit from semantic therapy-those with impairment inboth improve with either
WORD study led by Weny Best
Apologies - Professor Wendy Best from UCL
