In abortion law debates it’s bizarre the left attacks infant mortality rates being higher in red states. It’s higher because they have abortions at a MUCH lower rate than blue states. Blue states practice eugenics on "undesirable" babies. Red states give life a chance more often.
The Infant mortality rate correlation to abortion is clear. High abortion states kill more at risk babies before birth so IMR is lower.

High abortion state IMR:
CA: 4.5
CT: 5.09
NJ: 4.53
NY: 4.72

Low abortion state IMR:
S Dakota: 6.48
Wyoming: 5.37
Kentucky: 6.38
Missouri: 6.74
If you see someone on the left attack infant mortality rates in red states, keep in mind the reason: Blue states are more likely to kill babies at risk for birth defects while women in red states are far more likely to give the baby a chance. Let me tell you why it’s worth it...
It’s worth giving life a chance because doctors are wrong sometimes. Just today we heard about a woman who aborted due to suspected birth defects only to find out her baby was healthy after she went through with the abortion her doctor recommended. Tragic.

Update on @ladyinmedicine’s account: She finally received a notice today saying that she was found to be violating TOS by participating in targeted abuse. There’s no evidence attached or specific tweet cited. Let me tell you about her & tell you why Twitter’s acting like tyrants.
Followers of @ladyinmedicine know that she was born in Egypt. Her family fled to seek opportunities free of persecution for being Coptic Christians. Later they returned to find more discrimination. She was lucky to get into Canada and she’s felt privileged ever since, to be free.
Now in Canada she felt a duty to speak up for Coptic Christians who still living in oppressive places or are killed for their faith. For 10 years she used social media to tell stories the media ignores too often. People like @ladyinmedicine are their voice, not the media.

I spoke with Twitter today about the suspension of @CarpeDonktum’s page and it looks like they’ve made a wise decision in favor of the 1st Amendment’s satire/parody protections. It appears Twitter heard your voices. His account is unlocked and now he can make America laugh again!
20 minutes after Twitter reinstated @CarpeDonktum’s account they went and suspended him AGAIN for the same tweet. You can’t make this stuff up.

Social media companies have lost their minds. Here’s the new notice he received. Now trying to get an explanation from Twitter.
Update: @CarpeDonktum got an email from @Twitter confirming he did NOT violate any rules in the terms of service with the tweets that were mass reported but they still have him suspended despite being cleared of any violations.

Why does this only happen to Republicans @jack?

Oddly, the GOP doesn't put the same energy into infant mortality that it does into abortion.
The USA has a worse maternal death rate than Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Libya... and is 46th overall at 14 maternal deaths per 100,000 births.

Georgia has the worst maternal death rate in the USA at 46 per 100K births, a rate comparable to Iraq, Palestine and Mongolia.
The USA's maternal death rate has DOUBLED since the 1980s. The biggest relative increases were during GOP Presidencies, of course...

To me, maternal and infant mortality rates are two of the most powerful overall metrics in healthcare.

Maternal and infant death rates aren't really medical measures as much as they are proxies for poverty; access to healthcare; and racial inequities in a country.

There are a healthy number of people who believe the U.S. has the best healthcare in the world. That's not close to true.

While we have as much overall medical expertise as any developed country, we lag far behind in affordability and access. More people die as a result.

2/
That comes into sharper focus when looking at maternal mortality because childbirth is a discrete early-to-midlife event less affected by things like disease.

It's a proxy for poverty, healthcare affordability, access to care, and the impact of long-term systemic inequities.

The statistics are staggering and speak for themselves. Today, 45% of births are covered under Medicaid. From 2014-2016, infant mortality rates declined in Medicaid expansion states + increased in states that refused to expand Medicaid coverage. #MaternalJustice
Addressing the gaps starts with protecting gains made. 9.5 million previously uninsured women gained health care coverage under the ACA, growing the coverage rate for women of color to 2x the rate of women overall in 2013-2015. #MaternalJustice
But access isn’t enough if care is unaffordable. Rising deductibles mean even w/insurance new parents can be handed a several thousand dollar bill on their way home from the hospital. Maternity care is costly care, which makes price critical to #MaternalJustice

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/
