On mapping and political systems. At the heart of what is fundamentally broken is the way we measure things and how we are unwilling to cope with uncertainty, attempting to define in simple measures i.e. finance (which itself suffers the same flaw). Capital is more than this ...
... but to explore this, and the importance of social capital and why finance (i.e. money) is a flawed measure, I need to expand peoples horizon's a little bit with mapping.
I'll start that journey here, just a little bit to get people thinking. Maps are themselves maps of capital. That capital evolves and has many forms (physical, knowledge etc). I simply use different labels for each of the different forms at each of the stages of evolution.
... but I can choose a label from each stage of evolution. I could simply map a tea shop using the following labels. It's just different labels for stage I to IV ...
i.e. my Tea Shop becomes the following. But why do this? Simply put, it's easier to expand such a map into ethical and other considerations ...
i.e. I can debate how evolved our ethical capital is. Should my tea be sourced under fair conditions. It's through such mechanisms I can map political and legal systems by understanding that the underlying concepts are all forms of evolving capital ...
... now personally, I just my typical form because I know the labels just mean stage I to IV of capital. However, for others this is less obvious, and so the use of equivalent labels are useful.
The issue with financial "value" is the value of something depends not only on what you have invested in it but also how evolved the capital in its space is i.e. your asset can become a liability simply by the market evolving.
i.e. whether it's your economic, legal, political, ethical, scientific or physical systems ... the value is not constant but influenced by evolution in that space i.e. there is inherent uncertainty around it ...
... alas, far too often we try and use measurement to "reduce" that uncertainty despite that uncertainty being an inherent (and in cases desirable) property that changes as it evolves to become modelled / industrialised / known / accepted.
