Interesting thread, but I have a methodological caveat: When you see a measure with this little variation across groups where normally you would expect a lot of variation, you have to wonder if there is a problem with the measure 1/2
Asking people whether they agree "Political Correctness is a problem" may just not be a very good way to measure views of PC (or the broader norms associated with PC). Its a v vague statement, and v easy to agree with, for wildly divergent reasons 2/3
3/3 Its an interesting starting point, but I'd really like to see a wider range of measures attempting to get at this underlying concept and see if they all show the same lack of variation.
This reminds me of criticisms I've made of a measure on the British Social Attitudes survey asking people to rate their own prejudice. This also shows surprisingly little variation. But again, its vague. More concrete measures of prejudice show a lot more variation
I wonder if the same issue is at work: I found self-rated prejudice varied little because people seemed to vary a lot in what they thought "prejudice" meant. Could v well be the same with "political correctness". I'd like to see answers to concrete egs of "political correctness".
