[thread] "80% of parents surveyed are working beyond their contracted hours"

Now tell me that being a parent doesn't impact your career.

Work culture is horrific.
My Dad was a Consultant Paediatrician and a very good one. He wrote texts for nurses on care of the newborn... amazon.co.uk/Newborn-Child-… ... (not a lot of money in it but lots of satisfaction) and worked for 30 years or so in the same hospital
He also worked for the NHS and worked 100 hour weeks. Basically he was "on call" for 100 hours. It does make me think when people in Tech complain about getting woken up to fix a server when my Dad was *routinely* when up to go into hospital because a kid was dying of something.
My Dad lived under a lot of stress of course. He didn't have vesting stock options or anything like that. He did have a good NHS pension and that came in handy when he had a heart attack. He survived it, thanks to the NHS and a stent and is still around today.
When I was growing up, I didn't see my Dad that much except on holidays and a bit at the weekend. He was very tired a lot of the time, understandably of course. After his heart attack he got full pension and retired because the NHS realised that it was probably at fault.
I decided I didn't want that for my family when I had one. So I've made many decisions in my life where I've put family first over job.

I've been sacked for it on more than one occasion.

I've left jobs that were overly stressful as soon as it became obvious it wouldn't change
But I've always tried to be at my kids school plays and their ballet shows and their football matches and their doctors appointments and their parent teacher chats and everything I can be.

And I've rarely commuted for long periods because of work so do school runs too.
And so I've seen my kids grow up

And I've definitely not done the career thing right

And I don't have the multiple IPOs and the multiple vested stock options and the serious piles of cash behind me

But my kids know me, and that's way more important

PS I love my Dad
