New: Stephen Calk has been charged with using his position as the CEO of a bank to grant $16M in loans to Paul Manafort in exchange for trying to get a job with the Trump administration — the charging docs don't name Manafort, but it's him assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6024…
Here's our story from last summer during Manafort's trial where we learned about the alleged quid pro quo between Calk and Manafort: buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
Calk ultimately didn't get a job with the administration. During Manafort's trial, prosecutors showed an email that Manafort sent to Rick Gates a few weeks after the election saying, "We need to discuss Steve Calk for Sec of Army"

DOJ is asking the committee to delay the contempt vote until the president makes a decision about whether to invoke executive privilege (the vote is scheduled for tomorrow)
Besides the document issue, DOJ has also said that a senior official John Gore, will not appear for a deposition if he can't bring a DOJ lawyer with him. The committee has said that not allowing agency counsel in the room is consistent with longstanding practice

Last night, we got the latest status report in the Ms. L family separation class action. Since the last report in May, another seven kids in US custody have been released, one to a parent and the rest to sponsors — that's 2,773 children released so far assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6142…
As for identifying separated kids as part of the expanded class in the case, the govt is still working on it. They told the court that the universe of kids they're reviewing for eligibility in the case is smaller than originally estimated: 32,972, instead of 47,083
That doesn't mean all 32,972 were separated from parents at the border — that represents the number of kids who came through HHS during the time period in question who might fall under the case, but the govt doesn't know yet (it could incl. unaccompanied minors, for instance)

As of August 2016, he was ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN'S Council of Economic Advisors.

Every headline is missing the point...ANOTHER TRUMP CAMPAIGN ADVISOR was just indicted.
#REDFLAG: Manafort wasn't on the Trump team when he promised Stephen Calk an interview.

So, Manafort emailed JARED KUSHNER to ask him to consider Calk for a “major appointment.’’

On Nov. 30th, Kushner wrote back: “ON IT!”

...AKA "Transition Official-1."

Trump Campaign Manager Paul #Manafort arrived in Judge Ellis’ courtroom in Eastern District of Virginia in a green jumpsuit, walking with a cane. He will be sentenced in a few minutes on 8 counts of financial crimes. He also awaits sentencing in DC by Judge Amy Berman Jackson.
The guy who promised the best people and "extreme vetting"—didn't even google Paul #Manafort?? Remember that when Trump apologists say he didn't know about Manafort's years of dirty work for world tyrants. I've always felt Trump hired him BECAUSE of his work for Putin & Russians.

#Manafort charging document for today's guilty plea includes details of his planting disinformation in US press to smear political rivals of his pro-Russia clients in Ukraine. Eg "Plant some stink on Tymo"—painting a female rival as a criminal who paid for murder. Sound familiar?
Manafort had used the same propaganda smear tactics in Ukraine that Trump rolled out in his campaign for president in 2016. Manafort not only had Tymo soliciting murder. He pushed tribal divisions, using "Obama Jews" & anti-Semitism to tarnish her. assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4883…
#Manafort manipulated the media with disinformation and then used those planted news stories to manipulate US govt: "I have someone pushing it on the NY Post. Bada bing bada boom…The Jewish community will take this out on Obama on election day if he does nothing.”

With the conviction of former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and a plea deal being reached for Michael Cohen, the Trump administration is facing an(other) awful news cycle, so what will they do for the rest of the week?
On the one hand, their standard play tends to be to drum up a bigger scandal to distract from the one over which they did not have control.

We already know that White House staff have been drafting more security clearance revocations, so that's an option that's on-deck.
On the other hand, they can use the current scandal to preempt a potentially bigger scandal later, so this might be the time to push through some really heinous new policies.
