I feel I need to correct this as it comes up quite a lot but it isn't actually right.
As long as there have been Brexiteers, they have been against the/a CU with the EU.
And on Norway.....

On Norway, mainstream Brexiteers latterly (2015/2016) used it - quite cynically - as an example of what a country outside EU *could* look like without saying "that's what I want". Indeed when pushed, they said they didn't want it "because we can do better".
Before 2014, there were some (notably Farage and Paterson) who called for 'Norway' as a first step out - an idea in eurosceptic circles that can be traced back to the 1990s and early 2000s. /end
