This is the worst take on Lindh I've ever seen. Did the author actually do any research? How did the Times publish this? I was in Afghanistan as an Intell Analyst during the invasion. Lindh was brought to my patrol base for questioning. Here's some facts the author left out: +
1. The only reason Lindh didn't spend the rest of his life in prison is due to his plea deal. He gave intell in order to escape a life sentence, and YES what he did justified him never seeing anything but bars and grey walls for the rest of his life. +
2. Lindh traveled all over looking for the most radical jihadists to fight with. He eventually landed in Pakistan and joined Harakut ul-Mujahideen (HUM). They are a designated terror group allied with al Qaeda. He moved on from HUM and went to Afghanistan. +
3. Lindh was NEVER an "American Taliban". He was AL QAEDA. He went straight to Osama Bin Laden's training facility called Al-Farooq. Lindh personally met OBL. Lindh was given the option of overseas terror or fighting on the front lines. He chose front lines. +
4. Lindh knew that OBL had sent jihadists to the United States for an attack. After 9/11 Lindh was assigned to an Al Qaeda unit designed to protect OBL and protect Al Qadea SPECIFICALLY against retaliatory attacks from the United States. The unit was called 055 Brigade.
5. 055 Brigade was an Al Qaeda unit fighting ALONGSIDE the Taliban... not a Taliban unit fighting with Al Qaeda.
6. CIA Agent Johnny Spann was killed by Al Qaeda fighters that Lindh was fighting with. He wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time as the author suggests. He KNEW the attack was happening. He was part of it.
.@nytopinion if you want to write about such things at least have an editor to review these pieces that know the subject matter. If you can't do that then stay the hell away from the topic. This is utter garbage.
