We live in a time of worship for self, it has become the preoccupation of our culture. Moulding the self, investing in the self, expressing the self, self care and selfies. Capitalism, the meritocracy, and the normalization Of selfishness. It now seems that the only human
motives that are real are the self-interested ones. The desire for money, status and power. It seems that giving, care, and love are just the icing on the huge gateau of society. When society builds itself on self- preoccupation, society becomes separated from one another,
divided and alienated. That’s what has happened to us. The rot we see in our politics is caused by the rot in our moral and cultural foundations. The way we relate to one another, in the way we see ourselves as separate from one another. The emphasis on self has produced over
inflated egos, narcissistic sociopaths hell bent on achieving more money, more material goods and mire power. But the heart and soul of humanity has been eroded because all of this self-gratification has actually resulted in us not even knowing who we are or what we really
want. People are just blindly following what they think is the new norm. Yet the reason we have more mental health issues, a 70% rise in teenage suicide, a 40% increase in suicides over 40 is because all of these things we are told shows success leaves us empty. We create
versions of ourselves on Instagram, versions of ourselves that we ourselves can’t live up to. But what is frightening is that it has also resulted in a world we don’t recognise because everyone had been so pre-occupied with self. People have gotten into debt to carry the same
Marc Jacobs bag and Jimmy Choo shoes that they saw the ultra rich reality star wearing, probably given to entice you and your credit card, with all of that interest going straight to the top 1%. Making yourselves poor to look rich. And this reality/ fake Instagram life has
kept you so preoccupied and distracted that we now have authoritative politicians popping up all over the world. But through all of this there have been those that give, that care, that have been awake. We need a massive cultural change. We need people to reject distractions
The new normal has way too much apathy. I came to Twitter to find these people. These activists, and I found them in droves. People that fought for healthcare, fought injustice, that put others above themselves, that rejected the materialism, rejected bigotry and hate, that were
left in shock when we got this new pResident. A pResident that claims to be Christian, these a Republicans that claim to be Christian. Yet they don’t care if people get sick, go hungry, cannot get healthcare, that don’t love their neighbours or their brothers and sisters
as themselves, that turn a blind eye to corruption and crime and sexism and misogyny and homophobia and racism and xenophobia. But I feel a movement growing, a movement of we’ve had enough. A movement where we will never accept what they are trying to achieve. That we will fight
with everything we have, never giving up, always pushing forward and resisting their new dark vision. Maybe what we needed is exactly what we got, and it’s what we got that made us realise what we do not want.
