I should have also noted right before I presented, there was this back and forth between @bobzimmermp and @CharlieAngusNDP about subpoena of Facebook's CEO (@donie covered earlier today). Remarkable Facebook hasn't even communicated back to a Parliamentary Committee on plans.

Flying to Ottawa on US holiday to provide evidence to 14 nations‘ Parliaments regarding data privacy, platform accountability and impact on democracy. For more than a year, Facebook and its CEO have obfuscated answering challenging questions from many of these same leaders.
I’ve documented across now multiple years of Twitter threads a number of the details which Facebook refuses to come clean on as it tries to lobby and intimidate its way out of tough government and press scrutiny. Here is one thread:
At the first and only previous meeting of this International Grand Committee, @Nelelijnen stated, ”Facebook sent its cat” despite the many requests for CEO. And the Facebook who appeared, Lord Allan, didn’t quite understand the Flemish phrase. Quite an exchange.

With Google’s announcement it will block 3rd party cookies, I’ve been on pins and needles waiting to hear @jason_kint IAB’s reaction considering Google is its largest member and their lobbyist reacted so mildly the last time cookies were threatened by consumer privacy.
In all seriousness, this is where our industry is failing us. Whether it’s Google’s paying off ad blockers, blocking privacy, measurement, countless other issues, Google is still capturing agenda of industry trade groups where they can’t avoid hypocrisy doing Google’s bidding.
We’re one of the few major trade associations with zero revenue from Google. Nada. They finally backed out of supporting us over a critical op-ed from me. If you can’t understand their profit is being driven by shifting welfare from all sides of ad supply chain... it’s time.

Yes, important follow-up point to my previous tweet. Those challenged know 95% won’t want watch full interview, won’t read a full report, etc. They need large platforms like TV, op-eds in legit outlets for clips, sound bites to be used in places without context. @ReliableSources

For those who asked, here's a quick recap of my comments from the plenary on 'A #Data Driven World – Can we Ensure #Privacy?' at @OECD #GoingDigital. 1. Innovation is not in opposition to privacy: innovation *in* privacy is a huge opportunity, and a competitive advantage. 1/n
2. Framing and narratives matter. Seeing #data only as an asset (oil, gold, currency, etc) ignores implicit risks. Also seeing it as radioactive (with a half-life), an externality, a ticking time bomb, a liability, etc helps to locate it in a larger ecosystem. 2/n #GoingDigital
3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers
