1/ It's a short story, so some context: Bolsonaro was elected as a result of the perfect economic, political and cultural storm. The political focus was on corruption. Few Brazilians know, but that was not the reason for Roussef's impeachment. However, it was so critical...
2/... that the public perception was that the impeachment was a victory over the Worker's Party corrupt administration. The country was in the painful process of negotiating new civil rights. The silent and underground growth of the evangelical far-right gained momentum.
3/ After years of serious economic policy mistakes, Brazil had plunged into recession. The new far-right government's promise to rescue it from the threat was unsupported and the short reversal of that recession was just that: a short reversal.
4/ Bolsonaro's group is a typical sadopopulist one. They need to go "full potato". What nobody saw coming was that this involved confronting the (far right) high-ranking Brazilian military.
5/ Mostly because we couldn't imagine anything "rightER" than that far-far-right that defended "family and property", killed progressive youngsters ("all communists", including many, many Catholic priests) and reigned in a bloody dictatorship for 31 years.
6/ Protests on the streets show that the level of discontent is high enough to confront the scary Bolsonarist fascist-evangelical base. There is a rumor of impeachment, which would be a total disaster: the country is barely surviving the last one.
