This is an amazing thread. Please read the whole thing. I can add one tiny thing JoAnn did in addition to the many gigantic things described in this thread: she was responsible for me getting a PhD and becoming a planetary scientist.
2/ NASA KSC offered a fellowship for engineers to get PhDs, and I asked several managers for ideas what I should propose as a research topic. Mike O’Neal was JoAnn’s deputy. They discussed ideas and suggested I propose to study how rocket exhaust blows soil during lunar landings.
3/ I thought that was the coolest idea anybody suggested, so I made that my proposal. Then, JoAnn was on the selection committee, and she selected me for the fellowship. I don’t know if she even remembers me, but I will always be grateful for her role in creating “doctor” Phil.
4/ I knew JoAnn as a highly respected manager, and I knew she had earned distinguished service medals, but I didn’t know the rest of this amazing story. Thank you, @megsylhydrazine, for sharing this!
