Welcome to this month's look at #Starlink conjunction risk mitigation manoeuvres. Through 30 April 2023, I estimate that Starlink satellites have made a total of > 45,000 manoeuvres to mitigate the risk of colliding with other space objects [1/n] 
A better relationship to consider is the one between the (cumulative) number of manoeuvres and the (cumulative) number of Starlink satellites launched. The growth is a non-linear function of the number of Starlink satellites [2/n]
Here, I looked at the manoeuvre estimates/reports in 6-monthly intervals, corresponding to the reporting periods used by SpaceX. Additionally, I added a prediction to the end of 2024 based on an exponential fit through 30 April 2023. [3/n]

#RwOT at Yuhi we have been testing the @SpaceX #Starlink in Rwanda so that you don't have to venture into it blindly and not knowing what to expect, and here are a couple of observations we have made for the last couple of weeks of using it... 🧵
1. It took about 12 days from the day it was shipped to be delivered to us. This was a door-to-door delivery, so there was no hustle with customs or getting licenses from RURA.
2. From the packaging it seemed like the dish wasn't new, it looked like it had been used (had dust)

3. The setup is straightforward - you just need to plug in the power cable to the router, then the ethernet cable from the router to the dish (For power and data).

2. While SpaceX likely never ruled out potential military use, it was not a case they emphasized. Today, there's no question that Starlink’s prominence in #Ukraine war has militaries all over the world considering & looking to make greater use of it.
3. Currently, Starlink antennas are too large/too heavy for small drones. However, there has been momentum from the defense industry to experiment. In Nov. #Canadian company RDARS, announced that it had successfully integrated Starlink equipment to its Eagle Nest ground station.

Here is a theory around the reasons for the #Starlink outage we saw a few hours ago. There is an entity in the Starlink system I know as “The Central Scheduler”. Sounds grandiose, I know, but it’s the “brain” of the system.
The scheduler is tasked with orchestrating all the resources in the space segment, such as gateway connections, spot beam allocations, ISL interconnections, and likely a few others. It re-calculates the constellation in 15-second blocks.
We also know SpaceX was planning to implement a FUP starting in December. The purpose of a FUP is to control an ISP’s top consumers’ consumption of the most expensive parts of the network path, so that 10% of costumers are eating 90% of resources.
