The @MGMAdvertiser throws down on an AL state holiday celebrating the life of Jefferson Davis with 9 first-hand accounts of the horrors of slavery. This is good newspapering. If the state wants a holiday, don't let them forget what they're celebrating.

@MGMAdvertiser One of these stories that stands out: Delia Garlic, a woman who was beaten and sold away from her family because her drunk master didn't like seeing that she was afraid of him.

@MGMAdvertiser He saw who he was in her eyes and decided it was her fault. That's so relevant to fights happening today -- over Confederate statues, over landmarks named after slavery advocates, over a Jefferson Davis holiday.

@MGMAdvertiser White folks, here's a challenge for us: If somebody shows us our history and it makes us feel bad, take a minute to consider that it's not their fault we feel bad.
