Brexiters claim there’s some kind of equivalence between Obama behaviour in EUref and Trump’s interference now. This is a distortion of reality. Take a look at what Obama actually said: “Ultimately, this is something that the British voters have to decide for themselves.“ 
The Leave campaign knew that Obama was popular and respected and that what he said would carry weight. So they set out to neutralise it by whipping up anger, and telling people they were being lectured to and talked down when they weren’t. It was highly effective messaging.
