I cannot let this pass. The very idea that I’m a squish on life is deeply offensive to me. It’s repugnant to me. The fight for life has defined my life. It’s defined my career. Maybe David has done more than me. But this is my life’s work. /1
In 1992 with two friends I formed a pro-life group at Harvard Law School, called the Society for Law, Life, and Religion. At HLS I was shouted down for my pro-life views. I was vilified for my pro-life views, but this group endured — for almost 20 years. /2
Later, I had the privilege of representing one of the pro-life movement’s most courageous warriors, a UCLA freshman by the name of @LilaGraceRose. Planned Parenthood wanted her thrown in jail. I stood by her side. I was proud to do it, and I’d do it again. /3
Later, after I came back from Iraq deployment, my @AllianceDefends colleagues and I made a pledge to @StudentsforLife. If any of their activists at any public university faced official sanction for their pro-life activism, we’d provide free legal representation. /4
We delivered on that promise. It is one of the great privileges of my life to lead a legal team of dedicated, ethical, and — yes — civil and decent lawyers who preserved the pro-life witness on campus. And we won. Time and again. /5
At the same time, I also raised money for pro-life representation. I spent days and days away from my family speaking at fundraisers and meeting with donors. By God’s grace we raised tens of millions that went straight to the real work of the pro-life movement. /6
In fact, tomorrow I’m flying to Wisconsin to do my best to help Wisconsin pro-life activists raise money to save unborn children in their state. I love this work. It gives me purpose. /7
And yes I write for life. I try to use the power of the pen to spread pro-life ideas and to win people over to the cause of life. I will do this until the day I die. /8
There is more, that is deeper and more personal, but I don’t want to speak of it too much because it will open my family up to more grotesque attacks, to more hate, to more vicious threats. Those threats and that hate is happening today. But know this — I walk this talk. /9
So how dare you, sir. How dare you impugn my commitment to the most vulnerable people. I will not be slandered. I do not seek your approval. I don’t care about your approval. But the truth matters, and this is the truth. /end
