First workshop for Thursday at #ESSLC Visible Learning with @john_hattie and @tiattov #ESSC19 #vicpln @DETVic @BastowInstitute
.@john_hattie Asking ppl around the world about the teachers that had an impact on them. Two common factors 1. Turned you on to their passion. 2.Saw something in you that you didn't see in yourself. #ESSLC #ESSLC19
.@john_hattie #ESSLC More data but the @VisibleLearning story hasn’t changed.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Always working towards excellence as if we don't have it. Looking at the graph, not many things in the red (harmful), which is actually good news. Most things that we do enhance learning.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC The challenge is, how can we raise the bar. The average effect is 0.4 Around 60-70% are in the excellence zone.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Average effect size of a year of being at school is 0.40 Anything beyond that is more of a year of growth for a year at school. How can we celebrate the success we have. Lift those in yellow zone into blue zone.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC As a profession, have the courage to say. We're not striving for excellence, we have it now. If in the blue zone, the word change shouldn't exist, it is abut improvement.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC If in the yellow zone, you must change. It is not what you do, it is how you think about what you do.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Looking at this list doesn't necessarily mean don't do those things. But understand why they haven't worked. Why they haven't had a significant effect.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC These things work regardless of school. They are not structural. PLCs need to be about the things that matter - about impact - and that isn’t easy. The common denominator in these factors is expertise.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC We are the world's best profession at denying our expertise. The blue zone is dominated by expertise of teachers and school leaders.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC The best predictor of adult outcomes is the number of years in schooling. 95% of adults in prison in Vic did not complete school.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Is the school an inviting place for students to learn?
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Do you have a shared understanding of what impact is in your school? What do teachers think? If it is not about students you have a big problem! #vicpln
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Our obsession with high achievement in Australia is killing us. High achieving schools are not necessarily our best schools - the high progress, high growth schools are the best.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC We have lots of schools that are cruising (top left quadrant).
.@john_hattie #ESSLC The key question. Can the actually change the learning lives of kids?
.@john_hattie #ESSLC 80% of what happens in class the teacher does not see or hear
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Student expectations are very powerful
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Difference between high and low expectation teachers.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Learning progressions via @acereduau Useful model but, need to allow different routes students take to get there - find the best next step for each student.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Change in PISA results. Let’s not get obsessed with narrow excellence.
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Looking at bigger picture of education impact
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Growth to Achievement: on-demand resources for teachers @chriscawsey docs.education.gov.au/system/files/d…
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 School leaders need to understand dosage and fidelity
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Engagement - about learning not just doing
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Mindframes matter
.@john_hattie #ESSLC #ESSC19 Need a clear model of implementation
.@john_hattie #ESSLC Effect of focus on impact in Northern Territory system
.@john_hattie #ESSLC And that is a wrap for the Visible Learning session. Plenty to reflect on.@BastowInstitute @VisibleLearning @CorwinPress @DETVic
