dear followers, many of you know me for my science & technology-related work. it's common knowledge how the church has worked with the state to colonize & exploit Indigenous ppl. S&T's role in colonization is lesser recognized. I have focused on genomics. upress.umn.edu/book-division/…
while continuing to build #IndigenousSTS programs @UANativeStudies including a summer genome training program for Indigenous ppl, i've recently begun researching the suppression of Indigenous sexualities by settler states and their institutions. indigenoussts.com
@UANativeStudies genomics & sexualities may seem unrelated, but settler thought is preoccupied with purity & contamination in their thinking of race, sex & nature. genomics prefers to bleed "unadmixed" Natives. while Indigenous women are hypersexualized. In both cases we're exploitable resources.
@UANativeStudies whether Indigenous bodies are studied in the lab (historically w/o consent), or sexually objectified/assaulted, sterilized, murdered, we become resources used at the will of the settler & his state. our deaths & births managed to free up another resource for the state: land.
@UANativeStudies Settler states, e.g. the US & Canada, built methodically over centuries a complex system of institutions designed to rid the land of Indigenous ppl & our lifeways. We see this week that those morally invested in a settler state cannot wrap their minds around its genocidal system.
@UANativeStudies i'll continue to study the role of science & technology in eliminating & managing Indigenous ppl & lands. i add to that research on how settler institutions destroy & manage Indigenous sexualities as they seek ultimately to eliminate us via literal killing + cultural destruction.
@UANativeStudies part of pushing back against genocidal settler states is to refuse their narratives especially of Indigenous women's sexuality, and the sexualities of Indigenous queer & two-spirit people. this can be painful and challenging, but it can also be delightful. to that end...

@UANativeStudies @lindkirs @sovereignbody @tipiconfess @TheJulieGillis @BedPostConfess this thread shows that attention policing (i.e. Indigenous ppl "should be" concerned with this, not that) is analytical failure. assaults against Indigenous bodies & lands--be they murderous, sexual, enviro, genomic, legal, or representational, are systemic & together genocidal.
