The American people already collectively own most of the land of the western states. The result is that no one is allowed to use it. That land is no more useful than if it didn’t exist.

But make it private, and individuals will take possession and use it either for themselves or for their customers. Minerals in the ground benefit everyone when capitalists extract them and sell them to the general buying public. They benefit no one when the “collective” owns them

The same is true for the ability of the land to produce foodstuffs. Capitalist farmers working private land, produce enormous and continuously growing supplies of foodstuffs. Under collective ownership, in contrast, there is famine.

We already also have collective ownership of the public schools, the Post Office, subway and bus lines, and highways. The result is no individual initiative, no profit/loss incentives, and no competition. The further result is poor-quality products and gross inefficiency.

Do you imagine that #socialism will have the ability to produce as much as everyone wants, in whatever form they want it. So if I want a mansion and a yacht and a plane, I can have it? Or do you just give me a ration of dog food?

If there were no money, everything would be free and the quantities of things people would want would be beyond their ability to produce. Everyone would want a spacious house, many with swimming pools, tennis courts, and multi-car garages. That's impossible. They'll get crap.
