literally no trans person has ever said 'did u just assume my gender'

Only cis ppl say it, because they dont want to be held accountable for consistently misgendering someone. They belittle trans ppl as crazy and unreasonable and turn us wanting to be respected into a joke.
We live in a society where there are very narrow ideas about what gender is and weve grown up in that society. We arent shocked when someone misgenders us initially! We are very aware why someone would make that mistake! Its understandable!
But if someone asks u to please not use certain pronouns and you keep calling them that? you absolutely deserve to get called out, u fucker!
also the idea that we'd go right for the throat for one single instance of misgendering is so fucking wild like, u know we get murdered for being open, right? u think im gonna fucking go feral on anyone who calls me 'sir'?

i never in my life expected to make a tweet that got this much attention. Thanks yall, but im gonna be muting this now. All these notifs are givin me anxiety, but it makes me happy to know that this resonates with so many ppl.

public service announcement: we are now living through the biggest anti-#trans backlash since the 1970s. it's been going on since at least 2016. it's not just Republicans or evangelicals – it's coming from numerous fronts. & most cis people seem entirely oblivious to it...
...I should really be working on a different piece I'm on deadline for. but this has been on my mind a lot today. I can't tell you how many cis friends I've talked to over the last two years, who know I'm a trans writer & activist, and will ask how that's all going...
...and I'll be like "actually quite awful!" and I will tell them about TERF harassment & mass reporting online, or how not a day goes by with out the UK press publishing between 1 to 5 transphobic op-eds, or how transphobes are now rebranding themselves as "skeptics"...

I'm not saying that saying "I hate white people" is entirely rational or helpful, but if someone says it around me, a white person, I have the privilege to just go "eh."

Black people cannot be "eh" around the sort of guy who says "I hate black people." He might try to kill them.
The chance of a black person expressing the thought "I hate white people" or a woman saying "I hate men" actually getting violent with me is tiny.

The kind of people who say they hate black people or women have an extremely well-documented habit of acting on those beliefs.
And we don't just need to talk about physical violence. There's a rock-hard limit on how much even a black person in a position of power - say, a cop or a judge - could act on "I hate white people," because the system would VERY quickly shut that down. The reverse is not true.

To the best of my understanding, nobody has EVER deployed the phrase "did you just assume my gender!?" who wasn't being a transphobic asshole quoting a strawman handed down from another bigot, or someone explaining that's the only sort of person who uses it.

even make sense as anything a trans person ever WOULD say. If we're in the closet, we're not going to be correcting anyone, and are in fact going around in disguise as another gender honestly. If we're properly out, odds are we're doing everything possibly to make it very clear
to you (for instance, my name is Violet, I'm sitting here in a dress and makeup with my hair all fancy, so the only logical assumption would be that I'm a woman and would be correct). Plus we're the sort of people most likely to just stick pronouns on profiles/con badges to keep

so sick of the stereotype of an angry trans person who immediately yells “did you just assume my gender?!” as if any of us actually did that. hey guess what, being misgendered sucks ass. and most of us suck it up and stay quiet anyway. people who say something are fucking brave.
I know from experience that cis people hate getting misgendered too, and that many of them actually get hella upset about it when it happens. it just doesn’t happen to them very often. we trans people have to bear it all the time.
I spent such a long time in the closet before outing myself to close friends of whom I knew that they’d accept me, just because outing yourself is fucking terrifying. you think any of us would actually angrily yell at strangers because they wrongly assumed our gender?! hell no.

There are two facts which are staggeringly apparent in the online UK #trans landscape at the moment:

1. The mainstream media is still in a transphobic backlash, and it's been getting nastier and more dangerous every month.
2. In our online communities - twitter and facebook in particular - we are spending WAY more time and attention responding to and magnifying these instances of backash than we are in promoting not only our successes, but even mildly positive or neutral works.
