IBM is accused of firing older workers. This is really about money - and doesn't just apply to IBM. Many companies sneakily create practices, communications & policies (like not subsidizing family health coverage)to discourage hiring older workers.

Age discrimination is especially common in #tech, where appearing "cool" carries a premium for recruiting top grads & younger talent.

In most careers, there comes an inflection point where junior employees can do the same job (or ~80% of it) for way less.

3/7
Sadly, to companies we're no more than "human resources," so employees must make themselves indispensable, esp. as their salaries creep up.

How?

1) Develop a unique expertise: be known for it. Could be anything from a coding language to ideas generation to great #design.

what's the rapey noise study™, you ask? great question!

it's a (not good) study about interacting with a computer using your brain by focusing on a noise while other noises are playing.... [look ma, no hands!...]

@realDonaldTrump 1. The very important step in #SocialMedia is that #Tech-companies can no longer lock out #users by hiding behind "we are a private company & our rules apply"!

Social media today is part & parcel of #freespeech & participating in the public forum of ideas.

#SocialMediaSummit
@realDonaldTrump 2. So #banning people from main #SocialMedia-sites is like a form of exile: "Your ideas are no longer wanted here!"

Access to social media today is like access to a phone 25 years ago - It is now a main tool of social interaction.

#SocialMediaSummit
@realDonaldTrump 3. So rules, regulations, if need be laws, are required forcing #SocialMedia-companies to stop acting like an autocratic #BigBrother, #banning & muting people almost at will (hiding behind "our rules").

A fantastic thread on specific examples of breeding applicable interdisciplinarity.

In fact, I think we can go further, and designers can help.
There's a trend here.

In a lot of different environments, designers are realizing there's useful and powerful theories, insights, and communities from disciplines they never considered; and there happens to be a reactionary clash from the communities who live in that space.
We have an opportunity here.

Sometimes that clash is valuable, because it offers space for people to acknowledge, voice, and catalyze a community to make their knowledge known.

But sometimes, we can connect without friction, and towards a collective goal.

Great thread. Parts of it I agree with, others make me concerned.

Let’s unpack.
Clearly, the point of the discussion offers an opportunity to widen the tech pipeline; to ensure accomplished black CS HBCU students get their foot in the door. Critical. Essential.
However, it also offers a question that @peterme brought up: so, is Stanford then just an expensive trade school?

@cszhu An example of why Emulation was such a bleeding-edge tech, take Distributed Processing at it’s infancy in 1994-5 when I started using it to get around an outdated workstation IPX, and to speed up my compilation

Emulation required extensive compilation, synthesis, Place and Route

Britain needs a serious debate about #AI #tech #humanrights #discrimination. Instead, we’re still talking Brexit.

I'm a few years behind the curve; y'all still do follow trains?

Well, I'm starting one. Let's do one about #equitydesign.

@albanvillamil asked if I knew people, places, and tools for equity and design, and I wanted everyone to know everyone.

Spread the word! (1/million)
That being said, like equity work, this isn't (and arguably can't be) the definitive

Equity is a verb, like @_ChristineOrtiz says, so my hope is this is only the beginning.
I tried to get everyone's resources and descriptions correctly, but if there's anything wrong, feel free to correct me! (Crit's in our blood, right?)

Feel free to add, amend, include, and let's get to know each other. Cool? Cool.

A few weeks back, we've noticed our snapshot bills to grow weirdly high.. after some debugging, I've found the snapshot billing and way snapshots stored as an interesting concept..
As the graph says, the usage vs snapshot billing isn't growing proportionally linear.. (1/n)
I decided to debug how snapshots are billed.. fundamentally, snapshots are block-level backups of EBS volumes.. since AWS can't see data inside your block, they read disk blocks occupied and take a copy of them and store them as objects in their s3.. (2/n)
Every time there's a data change inside your EBS volume, by nature of linux and hard disks, the new blocks is where data is written.. So, AWS knows there's change of data (this could be deletion of data too) and marks those blocks as the difference in data..thus incremental (3/n)

New HUGE @ASPI_ICPC project just launched online: Mapping China's #Tech Giants. It represents 5mths work from 6+ of our analysts (& is why I've been more terrible than usual on email of late..).

There's a lack of public quantitative & qualitative data & to get underneath many of the major activities of some of these companies you need Mandarin, an understanding of Chinese state financing structure really helps & you need @internetarchive! chinatechmap.aspi.org.au/#/about-this-p…

A little thread, which I may come back to, for all those #technophobes who blame rise in #suicide on #socialmedia.

First: legit, what rise?
Second: The actual experts do not agree with you, and your fear-mongering is likely causing more harm than good.
cf. Thomas, K, and Gunnell, D. (2010). Suicide in England and Wales 1861–2007: a time-trends analysis. International Journal of Epidemiology, Volume 39, Issue 6, December 2010, Pages 1464–1475.
So, first the data, from #UK (above) and elsewhere (below).

Clearly if this epidemic was *caused* by a *single* factor it would permeate all societies with social media.

Infosec: Nobody listens to security people! 😡

Also infosec: Your password needs to be at least 15 characters long, contain numbers, upper and lowercase letters, and at least 4 special symbols.

Oh, and you can’t write it down.

And you have to change it every 90 days.
For 25 years, we security folks insisted on giving horrible password guidance with absolutely no empirical proof that this guidance would result in better security in the real-world.

In fact, the real-world effects of our password guidance actually led to WORSE security.
Bad password guidance happened because security people focus too much on attackers and not enough on the humans we aim to protect.

If our advice creates an impossible cognitive load for real humans, then we have failed to secure them.

Empathy is just as important as entropy. 💚
