Lots of talk about censorship and such on social media but what really is social media? I see social media as the automatic transmission of the internet. In other words, it allows more people to use the internet "better." It's easier to use then say a journal-o-list forum, a
Huffington blog space or the comment section of NPR in the same way the automatic transmission made it easier to drive a car. This is an important distinction because social media isn't the entire internet just like the transmission is not the entire car.
Removing an automatic transmission and replacing it with a manual transmission does not make you unable to drive the car. It makes it more difficult and slower in some ways but it doesn't ban you from the internet. So say a company like Infowars gets banned from social media,....
....it doesn't stop them from getting their message out on their website. People who get banned also have other ways to get their message out. Blogs, websites, comment sections, etc. This isn't saying that censorship isn't a problem; it is.
I'm simply explaining one of the main reasons that social media Censorship and all the lefts efforts to turn social media into a safe space is doomed to fail long term. The signal isn't banned it's slowed. It still gets out. It still reaches people. True, they now have to
..dhift gears more often, do more work to get the same speed and ease of use but they can still drive the message on the internet and still reach millions. Also, removing the automatic transmission doesn't mean the knowledge of how to build one is lost.
In fact, the more transmissions that are removed the greater the likelihood that some capitalist will build a new transmission shop, replace those transmissions and offer life time guarantees from future removals putting the removal people out of business.
In the meantime, while we wait for that new great transmission shop make sure you relearn how to drive a manual and/or check out some of the new shops that are in the process of construction. Censorship is a pain in the ass atm but it's impact in the long term will be nil.
The left are truly titling at windmills here. When all is said and done, the Luddites of the 19th century would have had more success stopping the use of machinery then the current censors will have trying to remove automatic transmissions from users internet experience.
