Another way of describing this is adding "Step 0", which is "these steps only apply to things your side already agrees with".
Everyone is adept at spotting and debunking political disinformation by the opposing side, and my twitter feed is full of people doing just that. My twitter feed is nearly empty of people identifying political disinformation by their own side.
Which makes it even harder, because if you do, then people believe it's because you are secretly on the other side, rather than being on the side of good information.
For example, Trump didn't say neo-Nazis were "fine people" after Chartlottsville, he said there were people who weren't neo-Nazis protesting the destruction of historical statues. Debunking this disinformation doesn't make me pro-Trump.
You can see this when you read the full text of Trump's remarks, where he's clear "But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists".
