Another way of describing this is adding "Step 0", which is "these steps only apply to things your side already agrees with".
Everyone is adept at spotting and debunking political disinformation by the opposing side, and my twitter feed is full of people doing just that. My twitter feed is nearly empty of people identifying political disinformation by their own side.
Which makes it even harder, because if you do, then people believe it's because you are secretly on the other side, rather than being on the side of good information.
For example, Trump didn't say neo-Nazis were "fine people" after Chartlottsville, he said there were people who weren't neo-Nazis protesting the destruction of historical statues. Debunking this disinformation doesn't make me pro-Trump.
You can see this when you read the full text of Trump's remarks, where he's clear "But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists".

So is there a quick technical overview of Libra contrasting it with other well-known cryptocurrencies? For example, it has smart contracts ("Move" programming language), how do they differ from Ethereum smart contracts?
2/ Libra uses a "consensus protocol" rather than "proof-of-work", like Ripple. Is there a good resource that fully explores the tradeoffs here. I understand Bizantine Fault Tolerance, but I'm not sure I grok how it's use in cyrptocurrencies.
3/ Libra is currently permissioned, which means only the group's members can run nodes, unlike Bitcoin et al. which are permissionless, where anybody can run a node.

So this is just a recapitulation of the debate we've been having for decades. The underlying issue here is not "responsible (sic) disclosure", but development processes. Google dev is based on 24 hour cycles, Microsoft dev on 6 month cycles.
When a bug is found in Chrome, then Google can fix it, test it, and release it to customers in a day. If a second bug is found in testing, it just means another day. When a bug is found in Windows, it takes around 90 days, and if a second bug delays this, it's another month.
Google manages Chrome as a piece of software that must be patched, and gives customers few options to do otherwise. Microsoft still manages Windows as software where patching is optional, even though in practice, it really isn't.

This is one of those examples where subtlety/nuance gets lost. Yes, the demonstration had value, no, it doesn't mean what you think it means. Kids didn't hack either election systems or an exact clone of an election system.
I don't know if it was "hype" so much as the impossibility of crafting a simple/clear message for something that is nuanced/complex. Election systems often have SQL injection vulns, and 11 year olds have enough skill to hack SQL injection vulns.
Election companies should be condemned for having one of the most trivial and best known vulns. But at the same time, it doesn't mean kids are hacking election systems.

1) The definition of empathy is contested and often confused. One friend who has studied the topic told me that the academic literature is filled with debates and discussions about empathy, sympathy, and compassion and the distinctions between them. 2/

Thing one: It’s Lewandowski, a lobbyist and talking head who is not part of Trump’s government.

Thing two: Trump did say he wanted the death penalty for these individuals.

Thing three: DOJ may control which charges are brought, but judges control what charges get tried.
I think this threat should make us both disgusted and vigilant. But watch out for despair trolls tolling the world-has-ended-already-and-we’re-all-gonna-die bell. We have not lost all our power to deal with such threats.
Impeachment is one way. And we should keep the heat on for that, while recognizing that upcoming trials of Stone and other Trump criminal accomplices in summer/fall currently shield some evidence we really need for that inquiry.

New topic, new thread: A proposed vehicle registration fee and a tax on natural gas use. LOTS of data to come on this.

The tax would have to be put on the ballot; the fee would not.
I'm hearing from council that pro-muni folks are NOT in support of the tax bc it might confuse ppl.
The vehicle fee would go to a variety of efforts to get ppl to drive less, to promote electric vehicles and technologies, etc. to reduce emissions from gas vehicles.
