Thing one: It’s Lewandowski, a lobbyist and talking head who is not part of Trump’s government.

Thing two: Trump did say he wanted the death penalty for these individuals.

Thing three: DOJ may control which charges are brought, but judges control what charges get tried.
I think this threat should make us both disgusted and vigilant. But watch out for despair trolls tolling the world-has-ended-already-and-we’re-all-gonna-die bell. We have not lost all our power to deal with such threats.
Impeachment is one way. And we should keep the heat on for that, while recognizing that upcoming trials of Stone and other Trump criminal accomplices in summer/fall currently shield some evidence we really need for that inquiry.
Another way, oft-maligned by despair trolls, is to fight Trump in court. Where we win, over and over, regardless of who appointed the judge or what her political leanings are thought to be. At every level.
Out of — what? Dozens of rulings now? — Trump has won only one case - the Muslim ban. Despair trolls are all pimping the same line “That’s because Trump has SCOTUS in his pocket, and five justices will all march blindly to his commands, no matter what they are.”
Listen to the lawyers. We don’t predict that. Not at all. Trump does not have even one vote “in his pocket” for his extreme positions. “But what about Gorsuch and Kavanaugh?” Two questions:

1. have we seen other Republican-appointed judges go against Trump? Yes. All. The. Time.
2. If your seat on the court were tainted by a corrupt process that could lead to your impeachment when Dems control the Senate, would you want to look like Trump’s corrupt toady and write a decision with zero basis in precedent? Nope.
Despair trolls have been playing various decisions over and over for you, to suggest that SCOTUS is now wholly owned by Trump and will violate precedent willy-nilly. I don’t see that happening. I see normal process being enforced.
Despair trolls will latch onto this thread and accuse me of having “blind trust in a system.” I don’t. I have educated, insightful knowledge that allows me to distinguish a corrupted, owned court from one that is working within normal bounds.
The one case where I saw obvious corruption in action at SCOTUS was Bush v. Gore. Most lawyers agree, regardless of political views. The reason that case stands out is its rarity.
Most cases that Trump WH and DOJ are teeing up under these bogus exec privilege and imperial presidency arguments? They’ll never see SCOTUS at all. They’ll get slapped down hard by a federal court of appeals, and they won’t even get the four votes for a cert petition.
Because Trump’s got nothing but empty words, at this point.
