TIL: In 2007 Ben Shapiro was an advocate for deplatforming. Specifically, he called for Columbia to rescind a speaking invitation for Ahmadinejad when he was Iran’s PM. creators.com/read/ben-shapi…
I also was interested to see him use a quote long beloved by conservatives: “Ideas have consequences.” Given Ben’s defense of a white teenager who is suffering consequences for articulating racist ideas, I guess advocating *those* sorts of ideas shouldn’t carry consequences?
I’m no fan of Ahmadinijad, but imagine going to the mats to defend the unhindered free speech of Alex Jones or Steven Crowder or Milo in 2019 after having written this paragraph.
I can say that I 100% agree with that statement by 2007 Ben Shapiro. Universities and private companies have every right to distinguish between lowest common denominator pandering and fruitful debate. Funny how that distinction seems to have been lost on 2019 Ben.
All of this takes on even more meaning on a day when a white guy who drank deeply of right wing social media tried to shoot up innocent people in the name of “defending Western Civilization.” nbcnews.com/news/us-news/s…
