.@kasie .@KevinMKruse Here is historical reality: Southern Democratic segregationists like Richard Russell, Herman Talmadge, Strom Thurmond and James Eastland blocked civil rights legislation for decades. Republicans like Ev Dirksen, Bill McCullough, Hugh Scott were instrumental
In helping LBJ, Hubert Humphrey & Democratic liberals pass landmark civil rights bills. But from Goldwater’s opposition to those bills on, Republicans welcomed former Boll Weevil Demcrats into their party, w/ Thurmond an earlier pathbreaker (switching parties after 1956 election)
With some exceptions, Republicans became the anti-civil rights party (an exception was James Sensenbrenner getting his party to accept a Voting Rights Act revision, which consrvative Republican Justice John Roberts eviscerated in Shelby County— and Republicans then blocked any
Revision to ameliorate the destructive anti-civil rights ruling. Overtly in many cases, in states like North Carolina, Republicans across the country, with the avid support of party leaders in DC, have pushed voter suppression laws and other ways to hurt minorities, especially
African-Americans. In the 1940s and 1950s, a deeply divided Democratyic Party was a prty filled with many segregationists. Since then, there is no question which party moves to hurt African-Americans in myriad ways. It is the Republican Party. Period.
On a ferry with rolling seas, sorry for the many typos!
And make Thurmond’s switch 1964, not 1956!
