All who love Australia mourn the passing of Bob Hawke. If you do, or not, Watch the remarkable eulogy by Kim Beazley. And besides mourning Bob, mourn the great tragedy of the Labour Party and the country that Kim did no become Prime Minister.
My only Bob Hawke story. I sat with him several years ago at an Australian rules football game, or footy. We talked for an hour or so, about the US and Oz. while he offered his analysis of the game along the way. After it was over, we walked together through a vast parking lot
Heading to the buses taking us back into town. It was a long walk, we got separated in the crowds from our group, and we did not see any buses on the horizon. A battered old car pulled up, and a working class guy rolled down the window and said, “Hey mate, aren’t you Bob Hawke?”
Bob said yes, the guy expressed deep admiration, Bob responded., “Are you heading into town?” After a yes, Bob said, “How about giving me a ride?” And he got in the passenger seat, and they drove off. Not many former prime ministers would have done that! Only a man of the people!
