This may come as a surprise. Marc Carney, Liam Fox and Boris Johnson are all correct. GATT Article 24 can be used. It means having an agreement with the EU. An agreement with the EU

But the letter assumes the UK can hand over a 1-page deal and the EU will agree.

Would a 1-page deal be enough *for the UK*? It would only cover tariffs & rules of origin. Not product standards, regulations, recognition, food safety, animal and plant health, services, intellectual property, arbitration. Would the UK be happy to exclude any/all of those?

First the good news.

We have a better explanation of GATT Article 24 from ardent Leavers, @MPIainDS and @DCBMEP.

Their description of Art24 is mainly correct. Mainly.

And the bad news? I’ll come to that in a few of tweets.

THE GOOD NEWS

1. They largely get GATT Art24 right. They define GATT Art24 as the WTO rule that allows free trade agreements. They even refer to GATT Art1.

Quibbles: a. it’s only about trade in GOODS, not services. b. You don’t “lower” quotas.

Here is Tim Loughton (@timloughton) making a false statement to the House of Commons. The falsity of which is not acknowledged )y International Trade minister George Hollingbery and is ignored by the Secretary of State Dr Liam Fox.
Firstly Ethiopia is one of UNCTAD's least developed countries (LDC). That means that it benefits from the EU's Everything But Arms (EBA) scheme which grants zero duties and quotas on all products exported into the EU apart from weapons. If Mr Loughton cared he would know this.
Secondly, Ethiopia is not a cocoa exporting country. I've checked on FAOSTAT (fao.org/faostat/en/#da…) and it is not listed among the 62 nations they have stats on cocoa production levels in 2016/17. Coffee yes, cocoa no.

The biggest lie I've heard about Brexit - and there are oh so many - is that Brexit was some kind of 'working class rebellion.
The most working class parts of the UK - Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Peckham - were all Remain strongholds.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, Rupert Murdoch, Paul Dacre, Liam Fox and Boris Johnson et el do NOT represent the best interests of workers.
It's more than bizarre this has to be pointed out.
So those TINY minority of Brexit supporters on the Left, please stop making out being anti-Brexit is some kind of 'centrist position. It's not.
It's being in agreement with 70% of Labour members (most of whom are pro-Corbyn) as well as with the vast majority of SNP, Green members

1. Today I lost all tolerance for remainers. As an EEA advocate I have tried to meet them half way. I want to preserve economic cooperation and open relations. But today I realised I'm dealing with people who don't want the UK to succeed.
2. There is an inherent strain of negativity that says the UK cannot self-govern, cannot operate an independent and successful trade policy and does not embody enlightened values worth exporting to the world.
3. I have never once pretended Brexit will be easy - and in terms of trade policy I think we will have to work especially hard just to stand still. But I see that as worth doing because it takes a while to build up the capability and learn the ropes.
