Is this statement true in any way? Neither the tweet nor the 9 minute interview disclosed msnbc’s view.
First a caveat, the Congressman in that quotation appears to be talking about Casa Padre, run by ORR’s private contractor Southwest Key, not the CBP facility in Clint—the nominal subject of the interview. What goes on at Casa Padre doesn’t really signify anything about CBP camps.
So is it true? No. Even at ORR’s Casa Padre, credible reports indicate the children are detained, the doors have locks, the perimeter has a fence, and the children are not “free” to saunter out the main entrance and shuffle off to Buffalo. nydailynews.com/news/national/…
What is reportedly the case is when detained children try to escape from Casa Padre—usually by climbing the fence—the staff doesn’t physically restrain them. Instead they ask them not to leave and, if that doesn’t work, they call the cops. cbsnews.com/amp/news/teen-…
