A6 #AAUWAsks I have so much to say on this one! First: You are more than academia. Being an academic is just one part of who you are. It’s important to maintain interests, social life & relationships outside of work!
A6 #AAUWAsks This is especially true for women of color, queer folks, & disabled folks: academia was not made for us & though our presence transforms it slowly, it can also wear on us, often being the only woman/POC/queer/disabled person in a room.
A6 #AAUWAsks For me, this has meant getting involved with local activism & supporting orgs here in Madison like @AboutFreedomInc, @OutReachLGBT & @OurLivesMadison. These social connections help me use my academic knowledge & skills for the benefit of folks outside of the academy.
A6 #AAUWAsks Remembering WHY you wanted to do the research or teaching you do & reminding yourself that academia is a job that you chose (& could stop choosing) is so important, esp right now with the world being so dire. Sometimes distance from the work helps you love it again.
