The 2000 Kansas City Wizards will forever hold a spot in my heart. They featured one Francisco “Jarvy” Gomez, a dear friend from my hometown of Watsonville, California, a Project 40 player who was eating chile verde at my dad’s apartment days before he signed for KC.💙
Around this time, a young woman named Carina Moreno was lighting CA boxing rings ablaze, hailing proudly from Watsonville. There’s not a lot of feel good stories out of our town. Having Jarvy & Carina to look up to as a kid was priceless. Great to be reminded of them here in KC.
No matter how much folks want to perpetuate the idea that circumstance dictates capability, it doesn’t. (F*** those folks.) Don’t ever discount hardship, but also don’t ever think that the people who look down on you and where you come from can stop your dreams. They can’t. 🖤
