Yo! Thanks for all the continuous love. Picked up a few new followers over the weekend, and with all the kind messages I received from folks I’d never met, I thought it‘d be polite to briefly introduce myself in a short thread, and tell you a little about my professional work. 🎙
While I will never “STICK TO SPORTS,” I do make a living as a writer and sportscaster. “Have mic, have pen, will travel,” has become a life motto. A main reason I moved to San Diego in 2016 was access to Tijuana, home to @xolos_en of #LigaMXeng. I then found love at first sight.
In 2018, I became the first ever English Language Radio Voice of @Xolos, Club Tijuana the only team in Mexican Soccer to have LIVE transmissions in Spanish and English. The broadcasts air on More FM, a duel-national bilingual station out of TJ. (Here’s my Mexican Radio debut.)
Club Tijuana are known as “El Equipo Sin Fronteras,” (The Team Without Borders) something that very much connects with my heart and soul. In 3 years covering @Xolos, including 2 seasons on the duel-national airwaves, I’ve been blessed with platforms to share my greatest passion.
In addition to my work with More FM and Xolos, I call games for the @SanDiegoSockers, alongside @619sports. Our beloved Arena Soccer team is in so many ways an embodiment of our Cross-Border Community, with a multi-cultural squad that includes 5 players born & raised in Tijuana!
A few months back, the Sockers signed @SdLandon. Our telecasts got picked up nationally. It was a lot of fun. I grew up watching Landon play in San Jose, a short drive from my hometown of Watsonville, CA. It was a bit surreal for us to be on the same pitch, indoors, in San Diego.
The last 6 months have been the most enjoyable period of time since I moved down here in a jam packed Volvo wagon back in the Spring of 2016. The prior 2 1/2 years were brilliant too! Countless people in this region, on both sides of the 🇺🇸🇲🇽 border, have treated me like family.
I’ve always seen sports, soccer in particular, as a vehicle for powerful social awareness and true, lasting positive change in our societies. I‘ll NEVER see it as two separate worlds. “Stick to sports” is dog-whistle for “shut up and be subservient.” It motivates me to do more.
One of the best things we can do as human beings is work with our youth, helping to instill confidence in our young people, especially those from working-class & disadvantaged backgrounds. I’ve been blessed to coach soccer since I was 18, while always promoting “access for all.”
Using the sporting vehicle in the framework of social justice is something I want to do for the rest of my life. I stand in solidarity with all those who face oppression in the world, and I want to use every conceivable ounce of my various sets of privilege to help people.
I’d love if you’d check out some of my other writing work, especially some of the “sports” stuff. 😉(Here’s a story I wrote last week about my respect for @trailblazers star @Dame_Lillard and my lifelong love for the @warriors and Oakland, California.) link.medium.com/Jp37lnCK2W
I also write A LOT of poetry. Usually on bar napkins or notepads. I don’t often share it on Twitter. (A book is in the works.) I’m not sure how Jack Kerouac, Hunter Thompson, Maya Angelou, or other literary heroes of mine would’ve felt about social media. But here’s some poems!
As much as I love the art itself, I love supporting fellow independent artists even more! Musicians. Actors. Writers. Athletes. All walks of life. If you have a project that you’re proud of that needs support, please never hesitate to reach out. We’ll see how we can collaborate!
And if you’re following my account for any one specific reason, please forgive the hodgepodge of tweets relating to ⚽️, ⚾️, 🏀, the US/MX Border, “Too Much Tuna,” my partner Sofia💘, taco pics, The Sopranos, hip-hop, Hank 3, Liverpool FC, and whatever else escapes from my mind.
Again, thank you for the continued love & support. Please remember why I and @AOC shared that story re: CBP in the first place; to help prevent it from happening to others. And remember that POC deal with this stuff EVERY DAMN DAY. Here’s to being better. Saludos a todos. 🖤
