Chief Justice Roberts has the partisan gerrymandering cases.
SCOTUS says partisan gerrymandering claims are political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts.
SCOTUS rules fed courts will not have a role in reviewing partisan gerrymandering claims.
Here's the gerrymandering case, and some of Roberts' majority opinion.
Chief Justice Roberts disappointed conservatives with the ObamaCare ruling. He just disappointed liberals for the same reason.

Institutionalism.
Reading Commerce v NY
It's not a clear cut decision. It's basically part remand, part reaffirmed. The majority upholds the district court, which remanded -> Commerce for further explanation of its decision.

But it's a Trump Admin defeat.
"In these unusual circumstances, the District Court was warranted in remanding to the agency, and we affirm that disposition."
"We do not hold that the agency decision here was substantively invalid. But agencies must pursue their goals reasonably. Reasoned decision-making under the Administrative Procedure Act calls for an explanation for agency action. What was provided here was more of a distraction."
SCOTUS did not remand this case because they agreed with the New York court's reasoning. In fact, the majority explicitly states they do not. Only that the explanation didn't square and that's why we have agency review.
Alito is a conservative dream. He basically wrote Commerce's motives are none of our damn business.
Here's the census case re: citizenship question, with opinion. It's complicated. Beware.
