Weird how the odds on Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren improve so much when people see them speak rather than only hearing about them through the filter of horserace narratives.

Trying to work out if there's some common factor here not shared by Biden/Sanders/Beto? 🤔
They both show a lot more variation in their clothing choices than the suits/jeans/shirts uniform of the other candidates. Maybe that's it?
Somewhat higher-pitched voices too. Maybe that's connected to this somehow.

This can't be the same Singapore that gets 97% of its electricity from fossil fuels
As Richard says, Singapore's nearly 100% gas energy mix is probably the only one that makes sense for a tiny dense island state with poor insolation, little territorial water and tricky relations with its neighbour...
But London, Paris, Copenhagen, Sao Paulo, and probably Houston are all "greener" if you're talking power sector emissions.

Singapore may be a bit better on the transport fuel front, but bear in mind a key part of the economy is one of the world's biggest oil refineries.

The very idea of negative-yield debt feels a bit Through-The-Looking-Glass. You're supposed to *earn* money from lending cash, not *spend* money for the privilege of doing so.

And yet from zero five years ago, negative-yield debt now accounts for almost 40% of government bonds:
The value has risen particularly fast in the past month -- roughly $2 trillion, of which $1 trillion has happened since the start of last week.

I wish I could say the death of Alan Kurdi caused European attitudes and policies to become more welcoming to refugees, but I'm not sure that it did.
Of course it's an impossible hypothetical. Maybe things would have been *even worse* without that photo.

But to the extent that policies have changed since, many have grown tougher (Germany's were already in place at the time):

Here in Australia then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott -- really! -- announced a special Syrian refugee program which was pretty clearly in response to the photo. I think it influenced the Canadian election, too. But in Europe ... not so much.

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve had a number of conversations about the Democratic race with people of my own demographic—straight, middle-aged, middle-class, liberal white guys. Here are my thoughts.

1/ One guy REALLY loved Joe Biden, and looked at me like I was nuts for calling him Handsy McGee. Others don’t love Joe but see him as necessary. “We need Biden on the ticket to assuage the concerns of the Middle American swing voter who went for Trump last time,” or somesuch.
2/ I don’t know that any demo has ever been as catered to, or as pandered to, as this possibly apocryphal group: Red State, white male, blue collar (ie, Red, White & Blue), voted for Trump because he hates Hillary, wants Trump gone but is unlikely to ever vote for a woman.

Instead of having a woman or POC candidate on @ThisWeekABC, it was @BernieSanders AGAIN. But he DID weigh in on women & POC:
ABC: #CoryBooker says he will name a woman as his running mate, will you make the same pledge?
BERNIE: I would give very serious consideration to that.

BERNIE: I think it's premature. It would be silly to make that statement right now.

Premature? Sanders has intimated he'd choose Nina Turner for four years. She may be surprised to hear this as she dumped Hillary for Bernie to rise through his ranks.

In 2016 Sanders claimed he and #HillaryClinton disagreed "on most things" although they had a 97% same voting record in the Senate and were both ranked in the top ten most progressive senators. He refuses to say this about Biden, with whom he has only 82% same voting record.

I rarely blame sexism for how people are discussing Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren but it’s the height of sexism that Pete Buttigieg, who is wildly inexperienced compared to either of them, is considered to be potentially just as competent.
The reason Buttigieg doesn’t have a long track record to deconstruct like Kamala Harris does is because he doesn’t have a track record
There are things people say they would do at the state level or national level and then there are the things they actually do. I don’t agree with a lot of Harris’s choices but I know what they would look like. I know she knows how to do what she says she’s gonna do.

The press has made a big deal about the new class of Democrats rolling into Congress and beyond, touting their 'diversity,' their 'socialism,' their 'sisterhood.'
Most of us look at that group and see 'extremism,' particularly with the kinds of views they've presented, and the obnoxious gaffes they've blundered into, apologized for or not. They're new, after all.
