One of the reasons I started Twitter this year was to offer a response to #BigEva takes such as this. I aim to be measured, but a response is needed because as I will demonstrate, this kind of callous slander hurts the people I pastor and they deserve a defense. Thread: 1/8
It’s one thing to voice disagreement. I understand and respect the non-participant position when it comes to two-party politics. That respect should be reciprocal. To go to the liberal, God-hating media (Time, really?) and slander fellow Christians like this is inexcusable. 2/8
David French and the #BigEva elites who share his stuff are not ignorant of the best arguments of strategic Trump voters. Where is the charity and seeking the best intentions of those w/ whom we disagree? I guess those principles don't apply to 'ignorant' conservatives. 3/8
I get these folks think they are pleading with the Church about our public witness. That's fine, make that case, but make it in-house. Don't slander the character of those who disagree with you and go to the media to call fellow Christians fearful and unprincipled. 4/8
If you think our “witness” depends on voting to please pagans who don’t fear God, who is the fearful one? Maybe the people not acting out of fear are the ones not overly concerned with 'optics' and trusting God with a plain choice to do the most good w/ their vote? 5/8
My point isn't to delve into that debate, it's to point out that French knows there are many principled reasons to vote Trump (or whatever comes next in the anti-leftist vote), but still takes the cheap shot. Interact w/ the best arguments and stop calling our people stupid. 6/8
The issue with #BigEva leaders saying this stuff is our people wonder if their local pastors think this. We don't! I don't think you're fearful if you voted for Trump and plan to again. People voted on issues and didn't want to be functional pacifists by not participating. 7/8
TL:DR - #BigEva leaders have every right to voice their political opinions, but they are out of line for calling our people fearful and stupid for a political calculation that has plenty of reasonable, coherent arguments. 2020 is going to be a mess if they don't drop this. 8/8
