Torah has been walked from its old home to its new one.
In related news, I am old. I walk roughly six miles every day, so I thought that this walk would probably be tiring, but not too bad. I have a fucked-up hip and feet from many years of ballet, though, and at mile #9, they were just like, NOPE, WE'RE DONE.
I think I'm just going to become a mermaid and live in an epsom salt bath for the foreseeable future.
But being old and rickety notwithstanding, I had an amazing day. The weather was lovely, somehow I didn't get sunburned, & our little mini-Exodus was a great bonding experience, complete with crossing bodies of water, unexpected mana (well, miraculous appearance of ice cream)...
& amazing interfaith community waiting for us at the end. We're moving into a tight-knit neighborhood of justice & healing-focused Unitarians, Muslims, neo-pagans, LGBT Baptists (!), Episcopalians, Zoroastrians (!), & Buddhists, working to act as force multipliers for each other.
And it actually made me a bit teary how excited they were to have us join them. We came down the hill to our new home singing, and they met us with applause and hugs and food. It was just really beautiful and joyful.
And what stuck with me more than all the speeches (state rep, mayor, etc. since we're moving into a community that has never had a synagogue before) was that they were almost more reverent toward our Torah scroll than we are, which is saying a lot.
Anyway, when I think about what I would want the future to look like--the tight-knit, local communities of the past that we've sort of lost in the 21st century, but with everything we've learned about living in global and multicultural societies, that neighborhood is it.
Also, shout-out to my community's incredibly fucking badass elders, children, and astonishingly well-behaved dogs who made the 12+ mile trek with us, wtf, HOW.
Also when we were ready to leave each rest stop, we blew the shofar to get everyone to assemble :-)
