NEW: The State of Maryland is withholding $55 million in capital funding from #WMATA.

Transpo Sec. Pete Rahn says WMATA has not responded to its audits on how Maryland’s money is being spent. “An unfortunate but necessary step... in response to... pattern of fiscal obfuscation”
And note Rahn is taking a seat on the WMATA board starting this month. Quite an entrance.
Maryland is supposed to give about $221 million for capital funding this year, so that's about a quarter of its contributions.

Rahn's letter also expresses concern on how WMATA calculates the subsidy required from each state. "WMATA has refused to offer details of the methodology," the letter says.
Maryland's General Assembly required an annual audit, but WMATA has ignored those attempts and has pointed state officials to its annual independent audit.
Maryland's subsidy has increased nearly $275 million "yet WMATA has failed to demonstrate how past allocations were spent and how additional funds will be spent in the future," Rahn says in the letter.
"If Marylanders are going to continue to fund WMATA at these exceptional levels, then Marylanders are owed a very detailed account of how WMATA has been spending and will spend in the future."
It is unthinkable for the State to provide $259 million without a legal agreement with WMATA. It is as if WMATA expects the State to simply deliver cash in a briefcase and walk away, no questions asked."
A Metro spokesperson says they look forward to sitting down and working out the issues with Maryland.
