From interview w/former SecDef Ash Carter this AM:
HH: The JCPOA, I don’t know if you’re a Monty Python fan, but that parrot is dead. But we still have, I went to the Aspen Security Forum last summer. It was a big wake for the JCPOA. 1
You kind of defend the deal, but you also kind of recognize what Richard Haass said last hour. It wasn’t long enough. It didn’t address ICBM’s. There’s got to be a better deal out there. Do your friends from the Obama era realize that the JCPOA is dead, dead, dead? 3
AC: Well, I can’t speak for them, but it is. I, we have to pick ourselves up and move on. It’s not going to come back in the form that it had. And you’re right. It was not, never could have been a grand bargain with Iran. 5
They’re doing too much bad stuff of which trying to develop nuclear weapons was just one. Now I was happy to have a verifiable agreement that took that headache off my plate as SecDef in a way that I could see wouldn’t necessarily last forever. That was fine with me. 6
But I never mistook it for a grand bargain with Iran.” hughhewitt.com/former-secreta… 7
