THREAD: I issue a public challenge to @salon writer @AmandaMarcotte to explain how the end of Obama Adm. marked what u call "the end of the treat-migrants-like-people era", when many of us documented things like the following:
@NoMoreDeaths 2011 report documenting 30,000 cases of rape, sexual abuse, beating & other abuses prepetrated against child & adult migrants during the early Obama years. 30,000. bit.ly/2smZIbb
5100 child refugees separated fr their parents by the Obama Adm. —in 2011 alone, accdg to this report by @RaceForward bit.ly/2N2RH43
How, for example, to the screams of 1000s of children separated from their parents as u hear here constitute humane treatment: bit.ly/2UugpC2
74 people died in Obama's "detention facilities" now renamed "concentration camps", as documented by @hrw bit.ly/2VzbhsZ
Border Patrol statistics —very conservative statistics—show that 3,000 migrants were pushed to death by dehydration, hypothermia and drowning every bit as horrific and inhumane as the deaths of Oscar & Valeria Ramirez. 3000 deaths.
Apparently, the @ACLU doesn't agree with your assessment of the treatment of migrants & refugees, @AmandaMarcotte. Look at the quotes from this 2018 report reviewing 30,000 documents reporting on abuse: bit.ly/2TXhPkj
“The students reviewing these records were shocked by the abuse and neglect these children were subjected to at the hands of U.S. officials. The fact that these children were already so vulnerable — most traveling alone in hopes of escaping violence and poverty in their home
countries — made the unlawful and inhumane actions reflected in the documents even more distressing,”
Oh, and in case you want to say that the Obama Ad had the refugee kids drinking Kool Aid, here's a report documenting that Obama, like Trump subjected refugee children to drinking toilet water: bit.ly/2Nr6cTO
This is but a taste of what those of us with decades of experience reporting and acting against abuse in immigration know. Not a single advocate with any credibility has ever said Obama's was a "treat-migrants-like-people era". As a journalist I challenge u to demonstrate how
the story in the documentation I have shown you constitutes humane treatment in any way, shape or form. And, as a Salvadoran who knows some of the 10s of 1000s of victims of these abuses, including kids whose friends slite their wrists to escape Obama's prisons, I ask that u
issue not just a retraction of our absurd statement, but an apology to those victims for reducing their pain, their terror, their lives destroyed during what you seem to think were the better days of US immigration policy. I look forward to your response. Thank you, R
