John Minford, #SunTzu 7: 20 "Extend territory, and distribute the profits."
Let us begin with the word "profits." Why does that NOT sound like a good thing? Why do we no longer fight wars of conquest, openly? Why do we not simply state, we fight this war to extend territory and distribute the profits?
Predictably, we find the answer in The Communist Manifesto, and its hypocritical distortion of history. Communists are allowed to fight wars, and to destroy the social order, since they are morally righteous and NOT fighting in order to extend power or distribute profits.
I might hope it obvious that nothing is further from the truth. Sadly, my hope is fallacious. It is not obvious. Here's a bit of tough logic to work through. Rich people have come to believe that their money must be used for good purposes. Why? Why is that?
Capitalism has an ethical foundation, and one finds it in Adam Smith's two books. No, not just one, the one everyone's heard of, but no one has read, The Wealth of Nations. I brag, I've read it. His first book was The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Just contemplate the title.
Sadly, cutting to the chase, wealth and morality are NOT exclusive, they are, in fact, necessarily to be combined. Sadly? We cannot supplant Master Sun's study with the study of Master Smith. I urge Master Smith for those who can make the effort, but we must return to Master Sun.
Well, it is July 4th, and we must focus for a moment, at least, on the extension of territory and distribution of profits indicated in our most important founding document, the Declaration of Independence. Here is my own reading of that sacred test:

Please note the term ALL. All men. Not merely Americans, eh?
Is there anyone, anywhere, in fear of life? In fear of loss oi liberty? In fear of an imposed sadness, the decimation of the right to the pursuit of happiness? Anyone? Anywhere? The territory of the Declaration of Independence is each and every human being.
Part of where we've gone wrong over the decades, recently, is with the idea of "nation building." Our job is NOT to build nations. Our job is to free humans to the three rights in our Declaration. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is the territory we must expand.
And the profits to distribute? Both Master Sun and I cringe over this one. Have I shared with you that some of the analysts I read attack this or that translation of Master Sun, for their failure to employ Dialectical Materialism in their effort? Do you know what that is?
When you read The Communist Manifesto, you will hear the subtly explained philosophy of Dialectical Materialism. I don't care if you're not a philosopher. I'm simply telling you, that's what you'll read. And that, my friend, is the complete basis of college education in America.
Dialectical Materialism is the philosophy of Hollywood, the MSM and of course, the Democrat Party. Interesting. Why don't we hear those two words bantered? The reason is that it is a 100% debunked theory, a completely disproven philosophy, that's why.
Here's the truth. When communists, socialists, Democrats say "the state" or "the people," they mean their own personal power and profit. They extend their own territory and distribute the profits to selves first, and friends who help them second. Communism is hidden profit.
And here's the great distortion. We look at our history as if we freed the States from Britain,or created the United States. We did all that, but that's to miss the point. What we actually did was protect each individual American soul from King George III's evil power.
Master Sun's command that we extend territory and distribute profits cannot be construed by any other means than capitalism. And, when we read our Declaration, we know that each man's soul is equal, to be recognized for its rights: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness.
Don't get me wrong. I'm NOT saying that Master Sun was a precursor to Thomas Jefferson, although Jefferson would have loved him if he'd had the opportunity. I'm simply saying that territory and profit commingle. And Master Sun's conquests led to profits.
What profiteth a man should he gain the whole world but lose his soul? The territory America must extend is the territory of freedom. No, we need not build nations. We need merely extend our principles, as written, to all men, all who have been created equally.
But how, exactly? It's so simple. Support freedom. Oppose suppression. Where possible. Yes, of course we have to deal with suppressors with nuclear tipped missiles pointed at us. We must protect ourselves, and that means negotiation with very bad men.
To follow Master Sun's counsel is, in the end, to extend the territory of freedom across the planet to each and every human soul. Extend territory. Distribute profits. These are very simple ideas.
Yet we must complete our homework. Marx and Engels. Adam Smith. They apply to today. And, they apply equally at federal, state and local levels. Still, Master Sun laughs at us. Just extend territory and distribute profits, at each and every level. Win. And be happy.
No pirate would reject life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness for himself. No pirate captain would take any from his crew without fear of loss of power. He might NOT extend these rights to others. But, in the end he lost, to whom? To us. To the US. We give those rights to all.

Addendum: I meant to point to the author of the rich person's "mandate" to contribute to good via philanthropy. It is too complex to hash out here. Yet, I believe a company should be a good thing, with ethics, and that no rich person should need to justify his wealth.
Rather, I propose, every wealth building endeavor must live by ethical principles. Wealth is good. Actions are either good or bad. Illicit profit is bad. Honorable profit is good. These should be simple things, but they are not. At any rate...
