“It’s hard for the world to know what we’ve been through," said city of Ridgecrest police chief Jed McLaughlin. "By the grace of God, we’ve had no casualties, and we’ve only had minor injuries, which is amazing, considering these two big earthquakes that we’ve experienced.”
Local officials say they've had four fires in Ridgecrest and Trona, including one that was a complete loss, and reports of gas leaks. Several mobile homes were knocked off their foundations. Police officials said there was a theft from one business and a break-in at one home.
A Red Cross representative says 163 people slept at a shelter set up in downtown Ridgecrest after Friday night's earthquake. She said there is space for 500 people, with air conditioning, cots, three warm meals a day and hot showers.
Caltech seismologist Egill Hauksson says there have been more than 2,600 aftershocks, including 52 earthquakes with greater than 4.0. There's a 3% probability of a magnitude 7.0 or greater in the next week, he said, and a 20% probability of a magnitude 6.0 or greater.
