First update from Brussels - Brexit seems to be a shrug combined with a withering look of disgust.
More from Brussels on Brexit. The basic attitude is "Come back to us when you have something serious to say". If that sounds rather superior on the part of the Commission at least, well they don't particularly do humble. But the attitude is widely shared.
Recent developments in UK politics, such as the leadership debates, and Alternative Arrangements Commission, are all seen in Brussels (and probably reflected on the financial markets) as having little to do with negotiating reality. They are not confident this will change.
There's no nice way to put this - in Brussels there is a fear that the UK is becoming too dysfunctional to be a credible negotiating partner. If the new Government changes this and wants to engage, the EU will do so. But we all know the parameters of that engagement /end
PS if there was a negotiation, the idea of extending the short Implementation Period to bury the Irish backstop could be feasible. But probably isn't given UK politics.
