I'm out of the country right now and only able to get online at random moments. But in the spirit of the fabulous @BlairBraverman, I will offer a brief photo version of my running essay.
Here I am the summer before I first tried and failed to become a runner. I'm not even running yet, but somehow I'm already tired.
Later, I earned a black belt (photo is from the end of my 1998 test) and taught martial arts for a living for several years. But during this era, when I tried running again, I found I was still terrible at it.
I preferred to use my legs for workouts other than running: breaking boards, kicking other people... and even getting kicked. That last photo is from day 3 of an 8-day Krav Maga instructor training, and I'm sporting a nice shiner from taking a foot to the eye.
But I *did* start running in the late 1990s and have kept it up for two decades. Here I am in 2019. I've cropped out all the worst parts of my running form, because I don't want pointers! Read the essay to see why being awful at running brings me joy: outsideonline.com/2398286/i-kind…
