*Breaking* Judge Furman, in the New York Census cases, has denied DOJ's motion to substitute new counsel for the existing lawyers (with two exceptions), but will permit DOJ to file a new motion if they explain the reasons for the withdrawals & certify the case won't be delayed.
The two exceptions are lawyers that have left, respectively, DOJ & the Civil Division in Main Justice.
The opinion concludes: "Defendants (That's DOJ) provide no reasons, let alone “satisfactory reasons,” for the substitution
of counsel."
The judge also signals that he's serious about the pending sanctions motions from plaintiffs (ie the state of New York), conditioning any future withdrawal motions for existing DOJ lawyers on their availability for hearings on sanctions.
